“Tarot” is a 2024 American supernatural horror film, marking the feature film directorial debuts of Spenser Cohen and Anna Halberg. Based on the 1992 novel Horrorscope by Nicholas Adams, the film stars Harriet Slater, Adain Bradley, Avantika, Wolfgang Novogratz, Humberly González, Larsen Thompson, Olwen Fouéré, and Jacob Batalon. The plot centers on a group of college students who start dying gruesomely after using a mysterious Tarot deck. They must unravel the deck’s secrets before it’s too late. Tarot Movie Storyline

A group of friends—Haley, Grant, Paxton, Paige, Madeline, Lucas, and Elise—rent a mansion in the Catskills to celebrate Elise’s birthday. Tension brews among them due to Haley and Grant’s recent breakup, prompting them to distract themselves by having Haley read their horoscopes using a peculiar deck of tarot cards they find in the basement. Elise draws The High Priestess, predicting she will “climb the ladder of success”; Lucas gets The Hermit; Madeline The Hanged Man; Paige and Paxton receive The Magician and The Fool, respectively. When Haley reveals Grant’s card is The Devil, signifying he is sabotaging their relationship, an argument ensues. Finally, Haley draws the Death card for herself.

The following day, the friends return to campus. Elise is brutally murdered by a monstrous incarnation of The High Priestess, who uses a ladder to bludgeon her to death. Lucas is killed by The Hermit in a train station, struck by a speeding train. Each death eerily matches the tarot readings, leading the group to suspect the deck is cursed.

Desperate for answers, they seek out Alma Astron, a tarot and occult expert they find online. Alma identifies the cards as belonging to an 18th-century astrologer who served a Hungarian Count. After the astrologer’s prediction of the Count’s wife and child’s deaths in childbirth came true, the grief-stricken Count had the astrologer’s daughter killed. Enraged, the astrologer cursed the Count and his friends to death with her cards before killing herself. The cursed deck has caused multiple massacres among tarot reading groups. Alma advises them to destroy the deck, which is still at the mansion.

On their way back, their car breaks down, and Madeline is killed by The Hanged Man. Panicked, Paxton abandons the group and returns to campus, only to be stalked by The Fool. Haley, Grant, and Paige manage to return to the mansion but fail to burn the cards. They seek Alma’s assistance again. Alma attempts to summon the astrologer’s spirit, but the spirit kills her with the Six of Swords.

Paige is gruesomely sawed in half by The Magician. Desperate, Haley decides to perform a reading for the astrologer, hoping to end the curse. As Grant is dragged away by The Devil, Haley gives the astrologer the Death card. She realizes all the cards are reversed, symbolizing the astrologer’s lingering pain. By coming to terms with her own grief over her mother’s death, Haley helps the astrologer’s spirit find peace, allowing the deck to be destroyed. Haley and Grant reconcile, and they reunite with Paxton, who survives after his roommate inadvertently saves him by opening an elevator door, making The Fool disappear.
