“Maiden” is a 2018 British documentary written and directed by Alex Holmes. It tells the story of Tracy Edwards and her crew aboard the Maiden as they make history by competing as the first all-woman team in the 1989-1990 Whitbread Round the World Race.

The film opens with Tracy Edwards recalling her childhood in England, marked by her father’s death from a heart attack when she was 10. Her mother remarried an abusive alcoholic who moved the family to Wales. Expelled from school at 16, Edwards ran away and traveled through Europe, eventually ending up in Greece. There, she became a yacht stewardess and learned to sail while traveling to the Americas. Her passion for the Whitbread Round the World Race grew, and she met King Hussein of Jordan, who encouraged her to join a yacht crew as a cook—the only woman on board—for the 1985-86 race.
Despite widespread skepticism, Edwards announced after the race that she was assembling an all-female crew for the 1989-90 Whitbread Round the World Race. The international crew faced significant challenges, including securing the crucial million-pound sponsorship. Edwards mortgaged her home to purchase a second-hand yacht, renamed it Maiden, and remortgaged it to finance its refitting, largely performed by her crew. With sponsorship arranged by King Hussein from Royal Jordanian Airlines, they entered the Fastnet Race, which they had to abandon due to an injury. Undeterred, Edwards led Maiden as both skipper and navigator in the Whitbread.
Maiden finished third in its class on the first leg from England to Uruguay. On the second and third legs through the turbulent and freezing Southern Ocean to Australia and New Zealand, they placed first, earning global recognition. However, water intake problems on the fourth leg back to Uruguay led to third place on the fifth leg to Florida. The final leg to England was hindered by a lack of wind, but Maiden secured second place overall. Edwards and her crew were celebrated upon their return, breaking barriers for women in sailing and sports. The film concludes with Edwards winning the Yachtsman of the Year Trophy.
