The compelling story of Matt Damon’s character Jean de Carrouges, set in medieval France, is told in the epic historical drama “The Last Duel,” which was directed by Ridley Scott in 2021. Jean challenges actor Adam Driver’s character, Jacques Le Gris, to a legal battle when Marguerite, his wife, accuses him of rape. Three segments, each providing a distinct viewpoint from the key protagonists, are a brilliant way for the film to tell the events. Ben Affleck plays Count Pierre d’Alençon in a minor role.
The process of turning Eric Jager’s 2004 book into an adaptation started in 2015 and was eventually approved in July 2019. Stars and co-writers Affleck and Damon were announced early on, with Comer and Driver following later. Taking place in France and Ireland between February and October 2020, the filming was impeded by the COVID-19 pandemic.
“The Last Duel” made its theatrical debut on September 10, 2021, at the 78th Venice International Film Festival. Distributed by 20th Century Studios, it debuted on October 15, 2021, in American theaters. The cast’s performances in the movie won praise even though it received a lackluster reception at the box office worldwide. It was even named one of the top 10 movies of 2021 by the National Board of Review. Remarkably, the movie was profitable in post-theatrical markets.
To resolve his disagreement with his wife Marguerite, the Knight Jean de Carrouges must challenge his old buddy to a death-defying duel.

The Last Duel Storyline
Set against the turbulent backdrop of 14th-century France, Sir Jean de Carrouges is an experienced knight whose friendship with Squire Jacques Le Gris has soured since the Battle of Poitiers. The story becomes complicated when Jean, who was formerly Count Pierre d’Alençon’s trusted ally, loses his favor. Additionally, the fragile relationship is further torn apart when Jean’s beautiful wife, Marguerite de Thibouville, accuses Le Gris of a horrible crime: rape.
Jean uses the outmoded dueling custom to restore his wife’s honor and enforce justice, even though doing so is against the law. The story is told in the Rashomon-esque manner, with three different truths serving as the story’s lenses through which the views of Jean, Jacques, and Lady Marguerite intersect and diverge to create a richly detailed narrative.
Each version of the truth is revealed with riveting intensity as the events leading up to the imminent duel are pieced together. Honored and obligated, Jean tells his story, exposing the agony of betrayal and the pursuit of justice. In contrast, Jacques offers his own story, tainted by the specter of betrayed intentions and competing allegiances. Lady Marguerite’s truth, meantime, reveals the emotional upheaval, susceptibility, and fortitude.
The clash of swords in this evocative voyage through medieval France becomes a symbolic battleground of opposing realities as much as a physical combat. The audience is invited to consider the illusive character of truth, realizing that reality is shaped by perception and that pursuing justice becomes an arbitrary endeavor.
What price will be paid for the unraveling of conflicting truths in a world gripped by honor, loyalty, and the complexities of medieval justice? These questions remain as the stage is set for the final duel, shrouded in the echoes of betrayal and the pursuit of vindication.
