Past Lives, a romantic drama film released in 2023, is Celine Song’s remarkable directorial and writing debut. Greta Lee, Teo Yoo, and John Magaro are among the film’s cast members. It tells the moving story of two childhood friends as they navigate their relationship’s changes over the course of 24 years. They consider the nature of their relationship as they conduct different lifestyles. Based on Song’s personal experiences, the semi-autobiographical storyline gives the narrative a more intimate feel.
Past Lives made its theatrical debut on January 21, 2023, at the Sundance Film Festival. On June 2, 2023, it opened nationwide. With favourable reviews, the movie was named one of the best 10 films of 2023 by the American Film Institute and the National Board of Review. Among the many honours it won were five nominations for the 81st Golden Globe Awards, which included a nomination for Best Motion Picture—Drama. Its quality was also recognised by the 96th Academy Awards, which nominated it for Best Original Screenplay and Best Picture.
After Nora’s family leaves South Korea, their close-knit childhood friendship with Hae Sung is shattered. Twenty years later, they reconvene for a single, fateful week during which they wrestle with ideas of fate and love.

Twelve-year-old friends Na Young and Hae Sung fall in love and go on a date in Seoul. However, once Na Young’s family moves to Toronto, they lose touch. Hae Sung and Nora (previously Na Young) reunite on Facebook in 2012, twelve years later. They can’t meet in person, but they have a strong bond over video conversations. Their correspondence is put on hold while Nora concentrates on her writing. In the meantime, Hae Sung starts seeing someone else, and Nora travels to Montauk and meets and falls in love with Arthur.
After a further twelve years, Nora and Arthur tie the knot in New York. After ending his relationship, Hae Sung pays Nora a visit. Arthur wonders if he’s a barrier to their ill-fated romance, believing Nora married him in exchange for a green card. Arthur is reassured by Nora of her love. Over dinner, the three of them converse only in Korean, with Nora and Hae Sung being the exception. Hae Sung ponders their previous incarnations and the possible outcomes if Nora had stayed in South Korea. Hae Sung departs after they talk about future reincarnations and expresses doubt about their afterlife. Tearful, Nora heads back to her flat with Arthur’s help.
Hae Sung and Nora share a sad gaze before he drives out in an Uber, raising questions about the nature of their connection.
