The Beautiful Game Movie Storyline
Former youth football trainer Mal Bradley saves Vinny from an angry parent during a youth training session. He introduces Vinny to his ‘dream team,’ a squad he’s coaching for a global football tournament in Rome. Vinny isn’t impressed at first.
When Vinny stays for a meal, he realizes they’re talking about the Homeless World Cup. He insists he doesn’t qualify and leaves. Mal follows him to his car, where Vinny has been living. Seeing that Vinny is too proud to admit his struggles, Mal leaves his number and goes.
Vinny often has flashbacks to his brief West Ham football career and youth team. Currently, he is turned away from his part-time job. When he visits his young daughter Evie, she invites him to a special school assembly where she’ll talk about someone she admires. His ex Ellie asks him to tell Evie if he won’t make it, so Vinny says he’ll be in Rome.
The team heads to Rome with Vinny. At the opening ceremony, Vinny sees it’s a truly international event. He shares a room with Nathan and freaks out when he discovers Nathan takes methadone, thinking he’s a heroin addict. Vinny runs off and falls asleep in a park.
The next morning, Vinny arrives to play their first match with South Africa. Since South Africa doesn’t turn up, England wins by default. They were delayed at their home airport because their Zimbabwean player has a restrictive visa.
In the England vs. Portugal match, Vinny leads them to victory. It’s Japan’s first year participating, and their young female coach is hard on them. After losing their first match, the Japanese squad sneaks off to explore Rome.
England’s Jason likes Rosita from the USA team but accidentally expresses his interest offensively. Jason makes amends by giving Rosita a salmon. The Japan coach also apologizes to her team.
The South African coach, Nun Protasia, convinces Vinny to agree to a match. The English squad is upset, but when Nathan tries to talk to Vinny, he storms off. Feeling guilty, Nathan wants to find Vinny, but the team insists he stay. During the search, Albar, Kevin, Jason, and Cal see Rome’s sights. Cal finds Vinny, and they bond over being fathers. Everyone agrees Vinny was right to support the rematch with South Africa.
The next day, Vinny warms up to the squad. During the match against South Africa, Nathan can’t finish, and they lose. They then play Japan and recover enough points to make the quarterfinals. They are happy but become sad when Nathan leaves due to methadone withdrawal. He’ll be better in the UK, where he has support.
Rosita forgives Jason and invites him for a run, explaining she’s a ‘Dreamer’ hoping to be scouted because she’s not a permanent US resident.
England beats Mexico and goes to the quarterfinals against Italy. Albar refuses to play because he’s a Kurd and the Italian captain is Turkmen Syrian. England borrows an Argentinian player, but soon Vinny is sent off the field for two minutes. Albar steps in, and once Vinny returns, he evens the score. In the penalties round, Italy wins. Albar and the Italian captain make peace.
Afterwards, the English squad argues. Vinny defensively points out why many of them are homeless. Albar says he’s a refugee barber and offers to give everyone a shave. When Evie calls to say her school presentation was about him in the Homeless World Cup, Vinny feels embarrassed and leaves.
Over dinner with the Italian director of the Cup, Gabriella, Mal explains he scouted Vinny when he was in West Ham’s youth training. Since being cut makes Vinny see himself as a loser, Mal hopes to help him.
The next morning, although Vinny is too late for the USA match, they still win. Rosita is scouted for college and named the most valuable player. Vinny substitutes for South Africa, thanks to Protasia, helping them win the gold.
Mal shows Vinny he scouted him as a child. With his confidence restored, Vinny helps motivate the next year’s team.
