The Batman Movie

Produced by Warner Bros. Pictures, DC Films, 6th & Idaho, and Dylan Clark Productions, The Batman is an American superhero film from 2022 that is based on the DC Comics character Batman. Under the direction of Matt Reeves, who also co-wrote the screenplay with Peter Craig, the film stars Colin Farrell, Zoë Kravitz, Paul Dano, Jeffrey Wright, John Turturro, Peter Sarsgaard, Andy Serkis, and Robert Pattinson as Bruce Wayne/Batman. The story follows Batman as he pursues the Riddler (Dano), a serial murderer who preys on the corrupt elite of Gotham City, and discovers corruption during his two years of battling crime there.

When Ben Affleck was chosen to play Batman in the DC Extended Universe (DCEU), development got underway in 2013. But after first agreeing to co-write, direct, produce, and appear in The Batman, Affleck finally withdrew owing to doubts. Reeves assumed leadership, rewriting the narrative and removing any references to the DCEU. Inspired by comics such as Year One (1987), The Long Halloween (1996–1997), and Ego (2000), as well as Alfred Hitchcock films and the New Hollywood era, the director set out to explore Batman’s detective abilities. Pattinson was cast in May 2019 and again in the latter part of the year. Filming began in January 2020 in the UK, stopped in March because of the COVID-19 epidemic, and then continued later in the year, ending in Chicago in March 2021.

The Batman had its Manhattan debut at Lincoln Center and was later released in theaters by Warner Bros. Pictures on March 4, 2022, after two delays caused by COVID-19. Despite having a budget of between $185 and $200 million, the movie turned a profit, earning $771 million, making it the sixth highest-grossing movie of 2022. Though some minor complaints were directed at its runtime, the film was critically acclaimed and earned great reviews for its acting, directing, visual style, musical score, and action sequences. The Batman received numerous other honors in addition to being nominated for three categories at the 95th Academy categories. With two sequels and two spin-off television series in development for the streaming site Max, including The Penguin starring Farrell, the movie is set to usher in a shared universe for Batman.

Storyline

On Halloween night in Gotham City, Mayor Don Mitchell Jr. is murdered by the enigmatic Riddler, setting off a series of events that unravel a web of corruption within the city. Billionaire Bruce Wayne, secretly operating as the vigilante Batman, teams up with Lieutenant James Gordon to investigate the murders. The Riddler leaves cryptic messages, leading Batman to the Iceberg Lounge and crime boss Penguin, who is connected to corrupt Commissioner Pete Savage.

As the Riddler continues his reign of terror, he abducts District Attorney Gil Colson, placing a bomb around his neck and demanding answers to deadly riddles. The investigation leads Batman and Gordon to the corrupt dealings of crime lord Carmine Falcone, implicating even more high-ranking officials. Selina Kyle, inadvertently involved, discovers the grim fate of her friend Annika and exposes the corruption.

During a confrontation, the Riddler reveals a personal vendetta against the Wayne family and targets Alfred Pennyworth with a letter bomb. As the truth unfolds, it is disclosed that Falcone orchestrated the murder of Bruce’s parents and framed them for heinous acts. Selina, with a personal vendetta against Falcone, attempts to take matters into her own hands, leading to a showdown with Batman and Gordon.

Falcone is arrested, but the Riddler takes justice into his own hands, assassinating Falcone. Unmasked as forensic accountant Edward Nashton, the Riddler is incarcerated in Arkham State Hospital. He confesses to drawing inspiration from Batman to expose corruption. However, Nashton’s final act involves planting car bombs throughout Gotham, leading to widespread destruction and chaos.

Batman, with the help of Selina, thwarts the Riddler’s followers attempting to assassinate the new mayor. Despite the devastation, Batman commits to rebuilding Gotham and inspiring hope. Selina, disillusioned, departs the city. As recovery efforts begin, Nashton makes a new ally in Arkham, leaving the future of Gotham uncertain but with Batman resolved to make a positive impact.
