Director J. A. Bayona’s gripping survival thriller “Society of the Snow,” which explores the horrific 1972 Andes aircraft crash in Uruguay, was released in 2023. With a cast primarily made up of gifted newcomers from Uruguay and Argentina, this film version of Pablo Vierci’s book tells the stories of the 16 accident survivors, many of whom had known Vierci since infancy.
In an Out of Competition slot, the movie received the honour of closing the 80th Venice International Film Festival. December 13, 2023 marked the start of its theatrical run in Uruguay. On December 15, 2023, it was released in Spain, and on December 22, 2023, it was released in the US. After that, on January 4, 2024, it was made accessible for streaming on Netflix.
Critics gave “Society of the Snow” a lot of praise. Positive reviews were partly due to its strong performances and gripping storyline. The film was recognised for its quality with nominations at the 96th Academy Awards for Best Makeup and Hairstyling and Best International Feature Film, where Spain was represented.

Society of the Snow Movie Storyline
An unforeseen tragedy struck the tragic Uruguayan Air Force Flight 571 in 1972 while it was en route to Chile to transfer a rugby team. The plane crashed into a barren glacier deep in the Andes. Out of the forty-five passengers, only sixteen made it through the initial crash and are now marooned in one of the planet’s most inaccessible and harshest locations.
The survivors faced a difficult task as they came to terms with the harsh truth of their circumstances: to survive in the icy and dangerous terrain. They were fighting starvation, the elements, and the constant fear of dying, but their struggle took an unexpected turn when they decided to turn to cannibalism. This desperate decision turned into a chilling example of the lengths people would go to in order to survive.
The group’s survival in the heart of the Andes was in jeopardy, and their fortitude was truly tested. The dramatic unfolding of their survival fight turned into an engrossing story of human endurance, tenacity, and the moral quandaries that emerge when faced with life-or-death choices in the most hopeless situations. The dramatic and moving account of Uruguayan Air Force Flight 571 continues to explore the boundaries of human existence and the decisions that must be made in the face of unfathomable tragedy.
