“Shaitaan” (meaning “Devil”) is a 2024 Indian Hindi-language supernatural horror film directed by Vikas Bahl. It was produced by Devgn Films, Jio Studios, and Panorama Studios. This movie, a remake of the 2023 Gujarati film “Vash,” stars Ajay Devgn, R. Madhavan, Jyothika, Anngad Raaj, and Janki Bodiwala, who reprises her role from the original film. The story follows a family facing trouble when their daughter falls under the spell of black magic cast by a stranger. They work to stop the possession and uncover the stranger’s motives.

The film was announced in May 2023, and filming took place from June to September 2023 in Dehradun, India, and London. The music was composed by Amit Trivedi, with cinematography by Sudhakar Reddy Yakkanti and editing by Sandeep Francis.

“Shaitaan” was released in theaters on March 8, 2024, during Maha Shivaratri, and received mixed to positive reviews. It grossed over ₹211 crore worldwide against a budget of ₹60-65 crore, making it the fourth highest-grossing Indian film of 2024, the second highest-grossing Hindi film of 2024, and the highest-grossing Indian horror film ever.

Shaitan Movie Storyline

Kabir Rishi, a chartered accountant, lives with his wife Jyoti and their kids, Janhvi and Dhruv, in Dehradun, Uttarakhand. On a vacation to their remote hill station farmhouse, they meet a mysterious man named Vanraj Kashyap. After Janhvi eats a laddu from Vanraj, she starts obeying his every command like a puppet.

Vanraj comes to the farmhouse, claiming his phone battery is dead. The family feels uneasy, and Kabir asks him to leave. But Janhvi, under Vanraj’s orders, stops her father. Vanraj reveals he has hypnotized Janhvi with black magic and demands they give her to him. When they refuse, Vanraj cuts the phone lines and makes Janhvi do strange and cruel things like hitting herself, eating dry tea leaves, and attacking her brother.

The police arrive after a call from Jyoti’s hidden phone, but the family acts normal to avoid danger. Kabir offers money to Vanraj, who burns it, revealing he is a demon who wants to control the world. He makes Janhvi dance, then orders her to stab anyone who approaches while he sleeps. Kabir tries to steal Vanraj’s phone, but Janhvi stops him by urinating in her shorts to avoid stabbing him. Vanraj wakes up and, disappointed, tells her to undress and change clothes.

Fed up, Kabir and Jyoti attack Vanraj. He commands Janhvi to laugh herself to death, forcing Kabir to let him go. Vanraj then orders Janhvi to kill her brother, who survives but is badly injured when she throws him from the terrace. Fearing for their children’s lives, Kabir and Jyoti agree to let Vanraj take Janhvi.

While Jyoti drives Dhruv to the hospital, Kabir secretly follows Vanraj using a tracker in his phone. Vanraj has 108 other girls under his control and plans to sacrifice them to gain the power to control anyone. Kabir cuts off Vanraj’s tongue and uses a recording of Vanraj’s voice to free the girls. Kabir had edited the recording to make it sound like Vanraj was freeing them.

As the family recovers at the hospital, the police return Vanraj’s hostages to their homes but report that Vanraj is missing. A year later, Kabir visits an isolated chamber where he has imprisoned Vanraj. He mocks the mute Vanraj, saying true power comes from parents protecting their children. He tells Vanraj this is now his hell and that he is Vanraj’s devil, promising to return the next day as Vanraj continues to suffer.
