Rebel Moon – Part One: A Child of Fire is a 2023 American epic space opera film directed by Zack Snyder, who co-wrote it with Kurt Johnstad and Shay Hatten. The movie features an ensemble cast including Sofia Boutella, Djimon Hounsou, Ed Skrein, Michiel Huisman, Doona Bae, Ray Fisher, Charlie Hunnam, and Anthony Hopkins. The story takes place in a fictional galaxy ruled by the imperialistic Motherworld. The Imperium, their military force, threatens a farming colony on the moon of Veldt. Kora, a former Imperium soldier, goes on a quest to recruit warriors from across the galaxy to defend Veldt from the Imperium.

The film had a limited theatrical release on December 15, 2023, and was released on Netflix on December 22. It received generally negative reviews from critics. An R-rated director’s cut, titled Rebel Moon – Chapter One: Chalice of Blood, is set to release in mid-2024, and a sequel, Rebel Moon – Part Two: The Scargiver, is scheduled for release on April 19, 2024.

Rebel Moon Storyline

Atticus Noble, the cruel admiral of the Imperium, arrives on the quiet moon of Veldt. He represents the Motherworld, an empire built on war and conquest. Noble says his troops are hunting rebels led by siblings Devra and Darrian Bloodaxe. He offers to buy the village’s extra grain, but their leader, Sindri, says they don’t have enough. A farmer named Gunnar tells Noble they might have a little extra, despite warnings from Sindri and another farmer, Kora. Angry, Noble kills Sindri and orders Gunnar to prepare the grain in ten weeks, leaving the village to starve. Noble leaves some soldiers and a robot called Jimmy to oversee things. Jimmy starts to think for himself after being bullied. Kora and Jimmy stop the soldiers from attacking a villager, and Kora kills the soldiers. She warns the village that Noble will kill them all when he returns unless they defend themselves.

Kora and Gunnar go to a town called Providence to find warriors to help. They meet Titus, a former Imperium general, and on their journey, Kora reveals her past. She was once an Imperium soldier named Arthelais, adopted by a commander named Balisarius after he destroyed her home and family. She protected a princess named Issa, who was supposed to bring peace, but Issa’s family was killed, and Balisarius took over and continued their conquests.

In Providence, Kora and Gunnar meet Kai, a smuggler, who takes them to find Titus. Along the way, they recruit two more warriors: Tarak, who tames beasts, and Nemesis, a skilled swordswoman with cybernetic enhancements. They find Titus drunk in a gladiator arena. At first, he refuses to help but changes his mind when Kora talks about avenging his fallen soldiers. Using Gunnar’s connections, they meet the Bloodaxes on Sharaan. Darrian agrees to help, but Devra and most of the rebels leave. After they go, Noble destroys Sharaan for aiding the rebels.

Kai admits he wants to change his life and has one last job. He takes the group to a trading post, but it’s a trap. Noble arrives, captures them, and reveals their pasts: Kora and Titus are deserters, Tarak is a former prince and criminal, and Nemesis killed Imperial officers in revenge for her children’s deaths. Kai betrays them for a bounty, but Gunnar helps Kora escape. They fight back, Darrian dies, and Kora kills Noble. The surviving warriors return to Veldt with Jimmy watching them.

Motherworld soldiers recover Noble’s body and resurrect him. On an astral plane, Balisarius orders Noble to end the rebellion and bring Kora to him alive so he can execute her himself.
