The affluent Mathew’s son Freddy falls in love with Anna Rose George, a Kochi orphan brought up by a priory, in the 1970s. They established a homestay in Thuruthikkadavu in response to objections. But Margaret’s marriage to Freddy is arranged by his family. Because of her friendship with Freddy, Anna is demoted from the Priory. As soon as Freddy moves to Madras and begins dating Margaret, cholera spreads to Thuruthikkadavu, causing Anna’s death. Fr. Francis has Anna buried close to her homestay after misjudging her and accusing her of breaking church laws.
When the letters are found by John in the 1990s, the whole story is revealed. John learns the truth about Freddy and Anna with Amir’s assistance, which leads to the reunion of Anna’s letters with Freddy’s family. A supernatural aspect is added to the narrative when Anna’s ghost briefly resides in John’s daughter and pursues closure with Freddy. The story comes full circle when Freddy stays in the house after the family moves out and begs Anna’s forgiveness.
The novel touches on a number of important subjects, including misunderstandings, love, loss, and society expectations. The way the supernatural aspects interact to create a sense of mystery makes it an engaging examination of human relationships and emotions over the course of two decades.
