Inside Out 2 is a 2024 American animated coming-of-age film from Pixar Animation Studios, produced for Walt Disney Pictures. It is a sequel to Inside Out (2015) and marks Kelsey Mann’s feature directorial debut. The film is produced by Mark Nielsen and written by Meg LeFauve and Dave Holstein, with a story conceived by Mann and LeFauve. Amy Poehler, Phyllis Smith, Lewis Black, Diane Lane, and Kyle MacLachlan return, joined by Maya Hawke, Kensington Tallman, Tony Hale, Liza Lapira, Ayo Edebiri, Lilimar, Grace Lu, Sumayyah Nuriddin-Green, Adèle Exarchopoulos, and Paul Walter Hauser.
The movie follows Riley’s emotions as they encounter new emotions vying for control of Riley’s mind. Announced in September 2022 at the D23 Expo, Inside Out 2 features Pixar chief creative officer Pete Docter’s concept of “five to 27 emotions” for authentic worldbuilding. The production team worked with psychologists to depict teenage emotional changes accurately and consulted a group of teenagers for a realistic portrayal of modern adolescence.
The film premiered at the El Capitan Theatre in Los Angeles on June 10, 2024, and was released in U.S. theaters on June 14. It has been well-received by critics and grossed $1.406 billion worldwide, making it the highest-grossing film of 2024. It achieved the third-biggest domestic opening weekend for an animated film and became the fastest animated film to reach $1 billion, ranking as the third highest-grossing animated film of all time and the highest-grossing Pixar film ever.
In a follow-up, Riley goes through puberty and develops new, intricate emotions as a result. Riley’s old feelings are trying to adjust to the thought of being replaced while she tries to adjust to being a teenager.

Inside Out 2 Movie Storyline
Two years after moving to San Francisco, 14-year-old Riley Andersen is starting high school. Her personified emotions—Joy, Sadness, Fear, Disgust, and Anger—now manage a newly formed part of Riley’s mind called her “Sense of Self,” which stores memories and feelings shaping her beliefs. Joy, eager to fill the Sense of Self with only positive memories, creates a mechanism to push negative memories to the back of Riley’s mind.
Riley and her best friends, Bree and Grace, are invited to a weekend ice hockey camp, where Riley hopes to make her school’s team, the Firehawks. The night before camp, a “Puberty Alarm” goes off, and mind workers clumsily upgrade the emotion console, leaving Headquarters in chaos.
The emotions discover Riley now overreacts to their inputs. Four new emotions—Anxiety, Envy, Embarrassment, and Ennui—arrive and clash with the original emotions. Joy wants Riley to have fun, while Anxiety focuses on winning a spot on the team and making new friends, especially after learning Bree and Grace will attend a different high school.
While Joy is in control, Riley inadvertently gets the campers punished by the strict camp director, Coach Roberts. Anxiety, aiming to help Riley fit in with the older players, sends the Sense of Self to the back of Riley’s mind and imprisons Joy, Sadness, Fear, Anger, and Disgust in a memory vault. Anxiety, Envy, Ennui, and Embarrassment create a new anxiety-dominated Sense of Self, encouraging Riley to befriend popular hockey player Val Ortiz, straining her friendship with Bree and Grace. Sadness returns to Headquarters while the others retrieve Riley’s old Sense of Self.
Under Anxiety’s control, Riley sneaks into Coach Roberts’ office and learns from her notebook that Riley is not ready to become a Firehawk. The old emotions find the old Sense of Self on a mountain of negative memories deposited by Joy’s mechanism. They cause an avalanche to return to Headquarters, spilling negative memories into Riley’s current Sense of Self. Anxiety realizes she has created a Sense of Self filled with self-doubt, causing Riley to perform poorly during her final tryout, accidentally hurt Grace, and get sent to the penalty box. Horrified, Anxiety causes Riley to suffer a severe panic attack.
With Sadness and a reformed Embarrassment, the original emotions return to Headquarters. Joy finds Anxiety in control but paralyzed. Joy convinces Anxiety that Riley doesn’t need to change for a better future. Anxiety relents, and Joy reinstates Riley’s original Sense of Self, but the panic attack persists. After Anxiety admits she can’t determine Riley’s identity, Joy realizes the same. Joy removes the first Sense of Self and forms a new one from positive and negative memories. The emotions embrace this new Sense of Self, calming Riley and helping her reconcile with Bree and Grace. Joy helps Riley happily finish the hockey tryouts.
Riley befriends Val and the Firehawks at high school, staying true to herself and maintaining her friendship with Bree and Grace. The original and new emotions work together to protect Riley, who checks her phone for the Firehawks’ recruitment results and looks at herself in the mirror with a proud smile.
In a post-credits scene, Joy frees Riley’s Deep Dark Secret from The Vault, revealing it to be Riley burning a hole in the rug. However, he quickly shuts himself back in.
