Garudan (transl. Brahminy kite) is a 2024 Indian Tamil-language action thriller film, written and directed by R. S. Durai Senthilkumar, based on a story by Vetrimaaran. Jointly produced by Vetrimaaran’s Grass Root Film Company and K. Kumar’s Lark Studios, the film features Soori, M. Sasikumar, and Unni Mukundan in the lead roles, with Roshini Haripriyan, Sshivada, Revathi Sharma, Samuthirakani, Vadivukkarasi, R. V. Udayakumar, and Mime Gopi in supporting roles.

The plot centers on Sokkan, a loyal confidante of childhood friends Aadhi and Karuna, whose faith is tested by a web of betrayal and survival.

Officially announced as untitled in September 2023, Garudan marks Soori’s second leading role following Viduthalai Part 1. Principal photography began in September 2023 and concluded in January 2024, with the title being revealed later that month. The film features a score by Yuvan Shankar Raja, cinematography by Arthur A. Wilson, and editing by Pradeep E. Ragav.

Released worldwide on 31 May 2024, Garudan received positive reviews from critics who praised the performances of Soori, Sasikumar, and Unni Mukundan, as well as Yuvan’s background score and Senthilkumar’s screenplay and direction.

Karuna and Aadhi, lifelong friends from Kombai, Theni, share an unbreakable bond. Their friendship is strengthened by Sokkan, an orphan who saved Karuna as a child and was taken in as a loyal companion. Raised by Karuna’s grandmother, Sellayee, the trio grows up close-knit, with Karuna now running a brick kiln and Aadhi owning lorries. Both serve as trustees of the Kombai Amman temple.

The story takes a dark turn when Minister Thangapandi schemes to seize unclaimed land near Chennai, worth ₹330 crores, belonging to the temple. Following Sellayee’s death, Thangapandi’s relative Nagaraj aims to control the temple committee but is thwarted by Sokkan, who is backed by Karuna and Aadhi. As Aadhi gains control of the temple treasury key, Nagaraj, incited by Thangapandi, manipulates Karuna’s wife Angayarkanni and her brother Vairavel, creating discord.

Inspector Muthuvel, coerced by Thangapandi, joins the plot, and Vairavel, already hostile due to past grievances with Aadhi, escalates the conflict. When Aadhi discovers fake jewels in the temple and suspects Karuna, he hands him over to the police. However, Nagaraj and Vairavel intervene, deepening Karuna’s sense of betrayal. During a temple festival, an attempt to rob the jewelry box is foiled by Aadhi, leading to a dramatic showdown. Sokkan, in a divine trance, severely injures Vairavel, saving Aadhi.

Karuna, realizing Aadhi’s pivotal role, decides to eliminate him. He deceives Sokkan, takes him to Kodaikanal, and returns to kill Aadhi with Nagaraj’s help. Despite Aadhi’s wife Katyayini’s plea to use part of the wealth for Kombai’s development, Karuna and Vairavel murder Aadhi. Sokkan, discovering Aadhi’s body, remains loyal to Karuna during the investigation. Karuna misleads Sokkan about the murder, and Katyayini fails to find a witness.

Aadhi’s son Samaran seeks revenge, but Sokkan protects him from Karuna, although Vinnarasi is captured. Sokkan takes Samaran to safety, but Nagaraj tracks them down. In the ensuing conflict, Sokkan kills Nagaraj and surrenders to the police. A business partner of Karuna reveals that Karuna poisoned Sellayee, which Aadhi confronted him about, leading to his death.

Escaping police custody, Sokkan seeks justice at Karuna’s brick kiln. Karuna brutally attacks Sokkan, but Sokkan fights back to save Vinnarasi, Katyayini, and Samaran, ultimately killing Karuna. Inspector Muthuvel resigns and submits a detailed report. The police officer warns Thangapandi that Sokkan’s conviction would implicate everyone involved. Sokkan is released, reuniting with Vinnarasi. The end credits reveal Thangapandi’s fatal road accident.
