Donovan Marsh is the director of the 2018 American action movie Hunter Killer, which has a script by Jamie Moss and Arne Schmidt. The 2012 book “Firing Point” by Don Keith and George Wallace served as the basis for the film. The film, which stars Gerard Butler and Gary Oldman and features supporting performances from Michael Nyqvist, Common, Linda Cardellini, and Toby Stephens, tells a gripping story about a submarine crew and a group of US Navy SEALs who are trying to free a captured Russian president in the midst of a political coup.
Lionsgate distributed the movie, which was produced by Neal H. Moritz, Toby Jaffe, Gerard Butler, Alan Siegel, Tucker Tooley, Mark Gill, John Thompson, Matt O’Toole, and Les Weldon in collaboration with production companies Summit Premiere, Millennium Media, Original Film, G-BASE, Relativity Media, and Tucker Tooley Entertainment.
On October 26, 2018, “Hunter Killer” opened in US theaters, but the film did poorly at the box office. Critics had differing opinions about it; some called it “an undemanding, by-the-numbers actioner,” but the cast performances and the film’s complex plot were notable features.
The movie’s ethereal tone is enhanced by Trevor Morris’s soundtrack, which is directed by Tom Marais and edited by Michael J. Duthie. “Hunter Killer” made $31.7 million in international revenue despite having a $40 million budget.
The film’s action-packed and politically charged narrative keeps audiences interested even with its poor box office performance—especially those who enjoy the genre’s traditions.
Together with U.S. Navy Seals, an unproven American submarine captain goes in search of the Russian president, who has been abducted by a renegade general.

Hunter Killer Storyline
As the Russian Akula-class submarine Konek is being shadowed in the Arctic, the USS Tampa Bay vanishes in a dramatic and high-stakes scenario. Commander Joe Glass, an unconventional guy assigned to head the investigation aboard the Virginia-class submarine USS Arkansas, is given the duty by Rear Admiral John Fisk.
At the same time, a squad of Navy SEALs under the command of Lieutenant Bill Beaman leaves on a clandestine operation to spy on a Russian naval facility in Polyarny. But when a revolution led by Defense Minister Admiral Dmitriy Durov occurs in front of them, their mission takes an unexpected turn. After Russian President Nikolai Zakarin is taken prisoner, the SEALs are drawn into a perilous scenario.
The Russian submarine Volkov suddenly attacks Arkansas after they uncover the sunken Konek and the wreckage of the USS Tampa Bay, which may be signs of sabotage. Arkansas strikes back, frees the survivors from Konek, and learns that Volkov launched the original assault on Tampa Bay.
The U.S. administration discovers the coup amid political unrest, and war preparations are advised. Glass persuades the commanding commander of the Russian submarine, Andropov, to help them. With Andropov’s guidance, Arkansas maneuvers close to the Russian base without being seen.
President Zakarin is saved by Beaman’s troops, but they suffer losses. When Andropov’s former vessel, RFS Yevchenko, under the leadership of Captain Vlade Sutrev, attacks, Glass declines to fight back. Disobeying orders, Andropov’s former crew destroys the base and protects Arkansas from missile assaults, foiling Durov’s objectives.
Glass sends President Zakarin and the remaining crew back to Russia once the war is avoided. The Russian Navy escorting the Arkansas picks up Beaman and Martinelli before returning to the United States, capping a successful mission that just missed a world war.
