Denis Villeneuve’s epic science fiction film Dune: Part One, which debuted in 2021, is an adaptation of Frank Herbert’s 1965 novel Dune. The first episode of a two-part series set in the far future is brought to life by Villeneuve and co-writers Jon Spaihts and Eric Roth. The story centers on the Atreides family, especially Paul Atreides, who finds himself embroiled in a struggle for control of the hostile desert planet Arrakis. A star-studded cast that includes Josh Brolin, Oscar Isaac, Rebecca Ferguson, Stellan Skarsgård, Timothée Chalamet, and more.

This is the third version of Dune; the first two were the 1984 film directed by David Lynch and the 2000 television miniseries starring John Harrison. Denis Villeneuve joined Legendary Entertainment as director in 2017, after the latter acquired the film and television rights to Dune in 2016. Filming took place in a number of places, including Budapest, Jordan, Norway, and Abu Dhabi, between March and July of 2019.

The movie was originally scheduled to be released in late 2020, but the COVID-19 epidemic caused delays. September 3, 2021, saw its world premiere at the 78th Venice International Film Festival. On September 15, it went on international release, and on October 22, it debuted in US cinemas and on HBO Max. Despite a $165 million budget, Dune grossed $402 million at the box office, showing remarkable success. Both reviewers and viewers praised the movie for Villeneuve’s directing and script, as well as for its ambitious visual effects, costume design, cinematography, Hans Zimmer’s musical soundtrack, and faithfulness to the original. Dune was acknowledged at the 94th Academy Awards, where it won six prizes and was nominated for four more, including Best Picture. The release of Dune: Part Two, the sequel, is eagerly awaited and is set for March 1, 2024.

In the distant future, Duke Leto Atreides is tasked by the Emperor to take control of Arrakis, a desert planet vital for its spice, a substance crucial for space travel. Suspicious of the Emperor’s motives, Leto contemplates the risks and benefits. Lady Jessica, Leto’s consort and a member of the Bene Gesserit, has a son named Paul with extraordinary abilities. Leto moves to Arrakis with his family, where Paul’s visions become more intense.

As House Atreides settles on Arrakis, tensions rise, and an assassination attempt on Paul fails. A betrayal by the Atreides’ doctor, Yueh, leads to the invasion of Arrakis by House Harkonnen and the Emperor’s Sardaukar troops. Leto sacrifices himself to kill the Harkonnen Baron, leaving Paul and Jessica stranded in the desert. Using their survival skills, they encounter the Fremen, natives of Arrakis who revere Paul. Paul envisions a future of holy war.

Baron Harkonnen installs his nephew Rabban as ruler of Arrakis, aiming to restart spice production. Paul and Jessica, aided by loyal allies like Duncan and planetologist Kynes, navigate the perilous desert. Paul’s plan to marry the Emperor’s daughter to prevent a civil war is revealed. Duncan sacrifices himself, Kynes summons a sandworm, and Paul wins a duel against a Fremen challenger.

In the deep desert, Paul and Jessica join forces with the Fremen, including Chani, a girl from Paul’s visions. Despite Jessica’s reservations, Paul embraces his destiny, striving to bring peace to Arrakis and fulfill his father’s goals. The stage is set for a complex interplay of political intrigue, mystical visions, and the struggle for control over the precious spice.
