“IF Movie“ is a 2024 American fantasy comedy-drama film written, produced, and directed by John Krasinski. The movie boasts an ensemble cast, including Cailey Fleming, Ryan Reynolds, Krasinski himself, Fiona Shaw, Alan Kim, and Liza Colón-Zayas, with voice performances by Phoebe Waller-Bridge, Louis Gossett Jr., and Steve Carell. Combining live-action and animation, “If” tells the story of a young girl (Fleming) who, after facing a challenging experience, begins to see everyone’s imaginary friends who have been left behind as their real-life counterparts have grown up.

Development of the film began in 2019, with Krasinski set to write and direct, and Reynolds attached to star. The rest of the cast joined between October 2021 and January 2022. IF Movie Storyline

Twelve-year-old Bea moves into her grandmother Margaret’s New York apartment while her father undergoes heart surgery at the same hospital where her mother passed away from cancer years before. One night, Bea follows a strange creature back to her grandmother’s building.

The next day, Bea sees the creature again, this time with a man. She follows them to a nearby house where the man, Cal, retrieves a large, furry, purple creature named Blue. Bea also meets a butterfly-like being named Blossom and faints.

Bea wakes up in Cal’s apartment and learns he has been working with imaginary friends, or IFs, to find them new children since their original ones have grown up and forgotten them. Initially reluctant, Bea decides to help Cal.

The following day, Cal takes Bea to Memory Lane Retirement Home, a community for IFs located under a swing ride at Coney Island. Lewis, an elderly teddy bear and the facility’s head, encourages Bea to use her imagination to redesign the place, which irritates Cal. Bea tries to match one of the IFs with Benjamin, a young patient at the hospital, but Benjamin can’t see any of them. Lewis suggests that perhaps IFs need to reunite with their original kids rather than find new ones.

Talking with her grandmother, Bea sees a photo of her as a young dancer with Blossom in the background, realizing Blossom was her grandmother’s IF. Bea decides to test Lewis’ idea. Playing one of her grandmother’s records inspires Margaret to dance, and she remembers Blossom, giving Bea hope.

Following a lead, Bea, Cal, and Blue find Blue’s original kid, Jeremy, now an adult trying to start a business. With Bea’s help, Jeremy remembers Blue, who boosts his confidence for a crucial business presentation.

That evening, Bea learns there has been a complication with her father’s treatment. Cal comforts her, suggesting she tell her dad a story instead of saying goodbye.

At the hospital, Bea tells her father a story about how she was trying to act grown-up but is still a child who needs her dad. He wakes up and they hug. When Bea steps outside his room, she realizes all the IFs who had accompanied her are gone.

Back at her grandmother’s building, Bea tries to thank Cal but finds his apartment is just an old storage room. After her dad is discharged, they pack to go home. Bea then realizes from an old painting that Cal is actually her own IF, Calvin, whom she had forgotten after her mother’s death.

Bea rushes to Calvin’s room, thanking him and telling him she’ll always need him. This allows her to see Cal and the IFs again, and they reunite.

Some time later, Cal continues reuniting IFs with their original kids, now grown up. Benjamin meets his IF, a cartoonish dragon doctor. Bea and her father return home, where he trips over his IF, an invisible boy named Keith.
