My Spy

“My Spy” is a 2020 American action-comedy film directed by Peter Segal and written by Jon and Erich Hoeber. The movie stars Dave Bautista, Chloe Coleman in her film debut, Kristen Schaal, Parisa Fitz-Henley, and Ken Jeong. The story follows a CIA agent who is outsmarted by a clever nine-year-old girl from a family he and his tech support are surveilling while undercover.

Originally released theatrically in Australia by STX Entertainment on January 9, 2020, “My Spy” saw its distribution rights acquired by Amazon Studios on April 8, 2020, due to global theater closures caused by the COVID-19 pandemic. It was subsequently released digitally on Amazon Prime Video and in select U.S. theaters on June 26, 2020, receiving mixed reviews from critics.

JJ is a former Army Ranger turned newly-hired CIA operative. However, his lack of subtlety leads to a disastrous first mission, where he fails to bust an illegal plutonium trade in Pripyat between the Russian mafia and Hassan, a Middle Eastern terrorist. Despite this setback, his boss David Kim assigns JJ and his tech operator, Bobbi, who idolizes JJ, to surveil the family of Victor Marquez, a French illegal arms dealer. Victor, who possesses plans for a miniaturized nuclear bomb intended for Hassan, lost these plans to his brother David. David hid the plans before being murdered by Victor, and Kim suspects that David’s American wife Kate and their 9-year-old daughter Sophie, now living in Wicker Park, Chicago, might have them.

JJ and Bobbi set up their surveillance in the same building where Kate and Sophie live. However, Sophie soon discovers one of their hidden cameras, traces the signal, and uncovers their operation. She confronts JJ and Bobbi, blackmailing JJ into spending time with her to help her adjust to American life and make friends at Oaktree Charter School. Despite JJ’s social awkwardness, he and Sophie begin to bond. JJ also grows closer to Kate and their neighbors, Carlos and Todd. Sophie convinces JJ to teach her the basics of espionage, further strengthening their bond and bringing him and her mother closer.

Eventually, Kim discovers JJ’s personal involvement with the targets and removes him and Bobbi from the mission. JJ confesses his true assignment to Kate, who reacts with disgust and rejects him. Meanwhile, Victor uncovers the CIA surveillance, forcing his lawyer Koll to reveal the location of the hidden plans. Faking his own death, Victor travels to Chicago, confronts Kate, JJ, and Sophie, and retrieves the plans. Carlos and Todd, revealed as independent arms dealers also after the plans, intervene. Bobbi’s clumsy attempt to help leads to Victor escaping with the plans and Sophie as his hostage.

JJ and Kate pursue Victor to an airfield in Naperville. JJ grounds Victor’s escape plane and engages him in a fistfight. During her escape attempt, Sophie accidentally sets the plane in motion, leaving it hanging precariously on some wire fencing. Victor forces Sophie to surrender the real plans. Before he can shoot them, Kate knocks him onto the fence, and JJ sends the plane off the cliff, killing Victor. Following this success, Kim reinstates JJ, who requests a permanent assignment to Chicago. JJ then moves in with Kate and Sophie, solidifying their newfound family.
